Following his appointment to the faculty of the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra cellist Alan Rafferty continues to gain recognition as a passionate and dedicated teacher. In demand as a clinician around the world, Mr. Rafferty joined the faculties of the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in Burlington, VT and Madeline Island (WI) Music Camp in the summer of 2014. Additionally, he has accepted invitations to return as faculty member to the Great Wall International Music Academy in Beijing, China and to the Meadowmount School of Music to present Master Classes.
Recent students have won: Grand Prize of the Music Teachers National Association Competition; Senior Grand Prize, National Federation of Music Clubs College and High School Awards; First Prize of the Ohio American String Teachers Association Competition; as well as numerous local and regional awards. As a chamber music coach, his groups have won the Gold Medal of the Junior Division of the Fischoff Competition and performed around the world.
A native of Albuquerque, NM, Mr. Rafferty made his solo debut playing the Dvorak Concerto with the Las Cruces Symphony at the age of 16 and has been a featured soloist on numerous occasions since. In November 2013, Alan will give the North American premiere of Victor Herbert's first published work, the Suite for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 3. A frequent guest on recital and chamber series both locally and abroad, he also served as the cellist of the Rhine String Quartet from 2009-2012.
Mr. Rafferty completed his MM with Hans Jorgen Jensen as a Civic Orchestra Fellowship recipient at Northwestern University. He received his BM in Cello Performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music where his primary teachers were Alan Harris, Merry Peckham and Richard Weiss.
Alan is active in the Starling Program, an advanced pre- college program at CCM, teaching cello and coaching chamber music. Additionally, he and his wife Sarah Kim, also an accomplished cellist, are co- founders and directors of the Cincinnati Young Artists which presents a weeklong Chamber Music and Cello Workshop each summer along with numerous activities throughout the school year (cincinnatiyoungartists.org).
