Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival Fellowship Program
June 28 - July 26, 2026

Fellow candidates should be seasoned chamber musicians with a broad knowledge of the string chamber repertoire; they should be at a professional level of technical accomplishment on their instruments; they should be comfortable in a mentoring role. The expectation is that Fellows will be exceptionally successful in their collaborative relationships and unusually thoughtful in their musical work, serving as artistic role models for students in the Senior program.

New in 2026: Pre-formed string quartets are eligible to apply for the Barnebl String Quartet Fellowship, established January 15, 2026 and made possible by a generous donation from Linda Barnebl in memory of her late husband David Barnebl. Read more details here.

  • The minimum educational requirement for Fellowship applicants is a Bachelor's degree.
  • Fellowship participants must attend all four weeks of the festival.
  • Pre-formed quartets are encouraged to apply and individual applicants will also be considered.
    • If you are applying for a fellowship as part of a pre-formed string quartet, all quartet members must file separate applications and a video recording of the quartet performing will be required. Please email info@gmcmf.org before applying as a pre-formed group.

Fellowship Program includes:

  • Free room and board for the duration of the festival
  • Performance opportunities at public and private venues
  • Collaborations with faculty in faculty concerts
  • Performance of competition-winning string quartet
  • Up to 6 lessons with festival teachers
  • Practice tutor responsibilities (5 hours per week)
  • Assistant coaching responsibilities (up to 5 hours per week)

  • Fellowship applicants should complete the Fellowship portion of the online application
  • Those applying for a Fellowship Position will be asked to solo plus chamber music performance links
  • Note string quartets applying for the Barnebl String Quartet Fellowship must submit specific repertoire in their audition videos (read below)
  • Fellowship applications will be reviewed after the March 1 deadline; those advancing to the next round will be contacted for an interview and will be asked to submit a CV and two letters of recommendation.

All audition recordings must meet the following criteria:

Solo Recordings

  • Audition recordings must present two contrasting works representative of your solo playing totaling at least 15 minutes. An example of two contrasting works could be a fast movement of a concerto or a showpiece and a movement of solo Bach. If two slow movements are submitted, applicant might be asked for an additional recording.
  • Recordings with accompaniment are acceptable, although accompaniment is not required
  • Audition recordings must only be solo playing; please do not submit recordings with a chamber group for audition videos for the four-week program
  • Recording instructions for solo videos
    • Audition recordings must be uploaded to YouTube and be viewable through June 2026. YouTube links must be set to ‘unlisted’, not ‘public’ or ‘private’
    • You may submit one recording containing both works or two separate recordings. Performances must be unedited.
    • Please ensure your whole instrument is visible in the recording frame.
    • Record in a quiet space with no background noise present. If you're at home, make sure you're away from extraneous noise, such as appliances (refrigerators and air conditioners), or outside noise such as traffic and construction.
    • Ensure your microphone is not too close to your instrument when playing. An external microphone is not required for these recordings, but may be useful in capturing the highest quality of sound.
    • Please listen to and watch your recordings all the way through before submitting to ensure acceptable audio and video quality. If you have questions, please email admissions@gmcmf.org.
    • If you have to choose between high quality audio and high quality video, choose high quality audio.
    • If you are recording from your phone, please ensure it is close enough to capture decent audio.

Chamber Music Recordings (Fellowship application only)

  • Chamber music recordings should show the fellowship candidate performing a movement of the standard chamber music repertoire (excluding sonatas) in a performance within the last year. Multiple recordings are welcome.
  • For Barnbebl String Quartet Fellowship applicants: audition recordings should include two complete works from the standard repertoire and one contemporary piece composed within the last 20 years
